Some of the questions I asked Alfred:
- 08:10 What's been your biggest challenge as a leader at Black Enterprise as it relates to the transition to digital?
- 11:15 What advice would you give to young aspiring editors and journalists wanting to step into the space?
- 16:15 Why Black Enterprise created the BE Modern Man initiative?
- 26:15 What is the Black Men XCEL Summit and who is it for?
- 42:00 What is the biggest thing you see missing in relationships?
I haven't worked for Black Enterprise for 30 years, I've worked for Black Enterprise 1 year, 30 times; because at the end of every year I make a conscious decision about what my next year will be like. I don't want to live on autopilot. Between January and March each year, I take 2-3 months to really commit to what I want to do! I make a conscious decision to stay and be purposeful with what I want to do with my life.
I'm media agnostic! I'm not biased toward print, I'm not biased toward digital. Whatever method I need to use to get the word out, I want to master it. I'm like a mixed martial artist, I can practice all of it.
While the magazine is the crown jewel, Black Enterprise is today an events and digital business. We use the magazine to amplify our offerings.
Don't get caught up in what you know. Technology evolves so fast, that what you master today will be irrelevant two years from now. The world belongs to those willing to learn, master and release. If you get caught up holding onto one thing, you'll become obsolete.
The sign of a business going down is not bankruptcy, but irrelevancy. If you don't have an extension of your platform on social media, you don't exist.
