Key Points from Stephen:

  • The feeling of becoming a father for the first time is indescribable. It’s often the proudest moment when you first see this living, breathing being that you helped to create. No one can explain the range of emotions you'll go through, and the life changing mindset that most of us experience.
  • For many of us dads, life gets really real and we all feel an obligation to our families like never before to become the provider and ‘the rock' when our partner gives birth to our children.
  • The truth is that despite this joy and excitement of becoming a new dad, the fact is that fear, depression, anxiety and exhaustion as new fathers is real for many
  • While becoming a dad was viewed as a time of great joy, almost 90% of men feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of their new role as a parent
  • 56% of new dads don't seek out information or support from anyone during the stressful times. Our pressure to be ‘the rock' was seen as a barrier to seeking help for any depression and/or anxiety.
  • 39% of first time fathers experienced high levels of psychological distress in the first year of their child's life
  • It's ok if you're feeling anxious or fearful or depressed. You're not alone, and it's ok to communicate your feelings and emotions and seek help!
  • Being a parent is a marathon, not a sprint. As fathers, we learn to constantly seek out the information you need to survive the next leg of the journey.
  • Parenting is the hardest job in the world with no prior work experience
  • Whether you're married or not, you've got to respect the other parent of your child.
  • Eat together as a family … without cell phones
  • Our career is important, but it's not more important than our kids. No material gifts or presents, will replace your physical presence.
  • If you've never had kids of your own, I want you to know that your impact matters. You can still influence young men and women that need you. There are so many who don't have a father and even those of us who do still need what you have to offer.
  • I've personally had several critical father figures in my life that were crucial to helping me on my journey. So know you won't need to do it alone as dads, and if you aren't a dad, you can still be a father figure to one who needs you, whether they've got a great dad or not.
