Chanel Hampton is the founder and CEO of Hampton Consulting, with a vision of specifically catering to mission-driven clientele.

In today’s conversation, we discussed what an emancipated youth is and what can be done to assist our young people who might find themselves in a similar situation.

An Emancipated Minor is a child under the age of 18 that is being responsible for themselves and is a financially independent citizen.

I remember getting my work permit at 14 and working 60-80 hours a week! Everyday I would get off the bus and work 8 hours a day and on the weekends all day Saturday and Sunday.

Questions I asked Chanel:

  • Could you maybe elaborate on your experience and educate us on what an emancipated youth is?
  • What got you into teaching?
  • What were some of the biggest lessons your learned as a teacher and throughout the rest of your career prior to Hampton Consulting that prepared you for this journey into entrepreneurship?
  • What's driving you in the work you're doing today?
  • Who are these mission-driven clients you are working with?
  • Share one action our future entrepreneurs should commit to this week, to help them blaze their trail?

Chanel Hampton Bio

Chanel began her career as a Middle School English and Social Studies Teacher. Acknowledging the limited diversity of her peers in teaching, she founded a permanent diversity initiative, adopted by Teach For America, which was ultimately launched in every Teach For America region (50+ regions). Recognizing a need for larger, systemic change, Chanel joined Teach For America’s National Recruitment Team. While with the organization, she served as the Greater St. Louis Regional Manager, Midwest Director of Diversity Recruitment, as well as National Managing Director of Recruitment. Throughout her tenure, she also managed diversity initiatives across the national organization and served on a number of inaugural and ongoing committees, including the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference.

In 2015, Chanel launched Hampton Consulting with a vision of specifically catering to mission-driven clientele. Hampton Consulting’s client roster ranges from the Campaign for Black Male Achievement and President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance to the Michigan Department of Education, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, the University of Michigan’s Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, The Skillman Foundation, the White House’s Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans and beyond. Whether recruiting hundreds of teachers for local neighborhood schools in her hometown or designing and building large-scale summits for 1,800 youth and hundreds of volunteers and community partners, Hampton Consulting is helping organizations live out strategic, meaningful, and equity-based missions.

Chanel holds Bachelor’s Degrees in African-American Studies, Psychology, and Sociocultural Anthropology. She also earned two Master’s in Secondary Education and Education Administration. She is currently working on her Doctoral Degree in Organizational Leadership.

In 2014, Chanel moved back to her hometown of Detroit, Michigan. She is the Board Chair of Detroit Young Professionals, a National Advisory Council Board Member with the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE), as well as the National Board of Directors Chair of Zeta Sigma Chi Multicultural Sorority, Incorporated. Chanel’s lifelong passions for social justice, education, and diversity drive her personally and professionally and motivate her to continue, as well as expand.
